A new poll suggests that Arizona residents support gay marriage and Gov. Jan Brewer’s veto of state Senate Bill 1062.

The veto of the bill is widely supported in a Public Policy Polling survey. The bill, which would have allowed business people or organizations to deny service to others based on religious beliefs, is opposed by 66 percent of voters polled. Twenty-two percent are in favor of the bill, which was struck down by Brewer on Feb. 26.

The majority of Republicans (51 percent), Democrats (86 percent) and independents (64 percent) polled were against the bill, and 72 percent of all voters agreed with the decision to veto it. Eighteen percent of those polled disagreed with Brewer’s decision.

Gay marriage, meanwhile, is another hot topic in the state. Public Policy Polling concludes that 49 percent of Arizonans are in favor of gay marriage, with 41 percent against it. That’s a change from a November 2011 poll that showed 45 percent were opposed to the practice and 44 percent were for it.

The latest poll results show that seniors are the only age group against gay marriage in Arizona. Further, 77 percent of Arizona residents support at least a civil union for same-sex couples — a figure that includes 69 percent of Republicans.

Nineteen percent of the voters polled disagreed with all forms of legal recognition of same-sex couples.
