Poll: Most Americans Would Accept Gay President

Americans' increasing acceptance of homosexuals "goes well beyond support for same-sex marriage," says a Wall Street Journal/NBC poll.

Two findings from the poll illustrate the magnitude of the change during the past 15 years, the Journal reports.

First, 76 percent of Americans "say that when it comes to the way society deals with homosexuality, we have reached a reasonable balance (32 percent) or not gone far enough in ending discrimination against homosexual people (44 percent)."

By contrast, just 20 percent of Americans "believe that we have gone too far" in accepting homosexuality.

In 2000, a similar question that lacked a middle-ground option produced results that were divided almost evenly, with 41 percent saying society had not gone far enough and 42 percent saying it had gone too far.

Perhaps more telling about current public opinion, according to the Journal, is a direct comparison with a question asked in 2006, when 43 percent of Americans "said they would be enthusiastic or comfortable with a gay or lesbian as president."

Today that share has jumped by 18 points, to 61 percent.

Feelings about a gay president, the Journal said, "speak to how much more tolerant and accepting we are as a nation to consider a gay or lesbian commander in chief representing the U.S. and our values. Less than 10 years ago, most Americans would not have been comfortable with this."

Another recent poll, conducted by the Family Research Center, paints a very different picture. The poll, released in February, found that "a majority of Americans, especially men, African-Americans and regular churchgoers, oppose same-sex marriage and want the Supreme Court to keep its paws off the issue," the Washington Examiner reported.

According to that survey, 53 percent thought marriage should be defined as a union between a man and woman, and 61 percent said the issue should be decided by the 50 states, not the Supreme Court.
