A former employee of Al Jazeera America is suing the network for $15 million, alleging that a superior discriminated against female workers and made hate-filled comments about Jews and Israel.

Matthew Luke, who joined the network in 2013 as a supervisor of media and archive management before its official launch, filed the lawsuit in New York Supreme Court this week, according to Politico.

He claims in the suit that Osman Mahmud, who was vice president of broadcast operations and had close ties to top executives, took female employees off major projects, cut women out of emails and meetings, and made anti-Semitic remarks, such as "whoever supports Israel should die a fiery death in hell."

Luke alleges that after he reported Mahmud's behavior to human resources, he was told he did not fit into the company's culture and was summarily fired, Politico reported.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Mahmud called the charges a "pack of lies," and said that if he had much such obnoxious, disparaging statements more people would have reported them.

The network said in a statement that it does "not comment on pending litigation," although it "takes these matters seriously and will respond in the appropriate forum."

The network added, "Al Jazeera America's commitment to diversity and inclusion is fundamental to its mission, and is boldly reflected throughout the company: in its staff, its leadership and its programming."

Al Jazeera America, the U.S. offshoot of the worldwide Al Jazeera network, was launched last year after buying former Vice President Al Gore's Current TV.

But the network has been struggling in the ratings, and reportedly has recently been laying off staffers and using more programming from Al Jazeera English.
