AK-47s Soon to Be Made in the United States

American gun enthusiasts will soon be able to purchase AK-47s with a twist: They'll be made in the United States.

Because of the sanctions the United States placed on Russia in the wake of that country's actions in Crimea and the Ukraine last year, AK-47s may no longer be purchased direct from the company that makes them, Kalashnikov Concern.

According to CNN, a gun importer in Pennsylvania has therefore decided to start making its own AK-47s under the Kalashnikov brand.

"I have a lot of inventory on my shelf bought and paid for," said Thomas McCrossin, the CEO of RWC, which owns the Kalashnikov USA brand. "We are permitted to sell these weapons because they were already in the U.S. But when the inventory goes down to zero, there are no more."

McCrossin told CNN his company, based in Tullytown, Pa., is in the process of looking for a factory in which to manufacture the assault rifles. He'll begin production soon.

"In the second quarter of this year we are going to start manufacturing here in the U.S.," McCrossin said. "What I'm manufacturing are our own AK-47s and shotguns under the Kalashnikov brand."

RWC is not allowed to contact Kalashnikov Concern, which is headquartered in Izhevsk, Russia, because of the sanctions. The 208-year-old company has been making AK-47 Kalashnikov rifles since the years following World War II.

The weapon's demand in the U.S. increased after the sanctions were put in place last year.

Russian Lt. Gen. Mikhail Kalashnikov, who invented the AK-47 in 1947, died at age 94 in 2013. He was "sad" knowing the weapon become the firearm of choice for terrorists and militants across the world.

"I'm proud of my invention, but I’m sad that it is used by terrorists," Kalashnikov once said. "I would prefer to have invented a machine that people could use and that would help farmers with their work — for example a lawnmower."

In other interviews, he seemed to have no regrets for how the weapon's image changed over time.

"I invented it for the protection of the Motherland," he said. "I have no regrets and bear no responsibility for how politicians have used it."
