Rural hospitals around the country could be devastated by cuts to Medicaid in the Republican legislation that seeks to repeal and replace Obamacare.

"A lot of hospitals like [ours] could get hurt," Kerry Noble, CEO of Pemiscot Memorial Health Systems in Pemiscot County, Mo., told Kaiser Health News.

Pemiscot Memorial operates the public hospital in one of the state's poorest counties and with the highest unemployment rate.

Pemiscot County, in the far southeastern part of the state, is heavily agricultural and ranks the worst in Missouri for such health issues as premature deaths and adult smoking rates.

Nationwide, nearly 80 rural hospitals have closed since 2010, according to reports, and nearly 700 are at risk of shutting down.

These operations generally serve older, poorer and sicker patients – making them more reliant on Medicaid and more exposed to changes in the federal program.

Created in 1965, Medicaid serves many of the nation's poorest residents, including children, seniors and people with disabilities.

Both the House and Senate versions of the American Health Care Act will roll back Medicaid assistance.

The House version, passed last month, cuts Medicaid by $834 billion over 10 years, Kaiser reports.

The Senate's working draft, released on Thursday, reduces aid even further, though on a different timetable.

Although the Congressional Budget Office has not yet scored the Senate plan, the House version would leave 23 million more Americans uninsured in the next 10 years.

"It would be devastating economically," Noble told Kaiser of Pemiscot Memorial, the county's largest employer. "Our annual payrolls are around $20 million a year."
