One in six U.S. adults surveyed in 2013 said they took psychiatric drugs, with antidepressants as the most commonly used drug, according to a study published Monday on JAMA Internal Medicine.

"I follow this area, so I knew the numbers would be high," Thomas J. Moore, a researcher at the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, a nonprofit in Alexandria, Va., and the lead author of the analysis, told The New York Times. "But in some populations, the rates are extraordinary."

JAMA pulled data from a 2013 nationally representative survey of more than 37,000 adults aged 18 to 85. Another staggering number was the number of long-term users, found to be eight in 10 adults.

"To discover that eight in 10 adults are taking psychiatric drugs long term raises safety concerns, given that there’s reason to believe some of this continued use is due to dependence and withdrawal symptoms," Moore told The New York Times.

Large differences were found in race, with close to 21 percent of white adults reporting use, and age – about 25 percent of people aged 60 to 85 said they used psychiatric drugs.

The study concluded that more awareness is needed about psychiatric drugs as "we found most patients were long-term users of the hypnotic zopidem tartrate (in a previous study) despite recommendations for short-term use, and many were combining it with other central nervous system depressants despite warnings."
