Zeta Beta Tau Wounded Vets Attack: Did Frat Spit on Disabled Veterans?

By    |   Friday, 24 Apr 2015 03:35 PM

Members of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity allegedly spit and poured beer on wounded vets and urinated on the American flag at a Panama City Beach hotel over the weekend, but one of the two accused chapters is denying any involvement.

"Our fraternity has been accused in the media of involvement in offensive acts on the aforementioned occasion," the Eta Lambda Chapter of Zeta Beta Tau at Emory University wrote in a statement released Thursday, CBS affiliate WGCL-TV reported.

"ZBT has worked in close collaboration with administrators at Emory to conduct a thorough investigation. We have found no evidence that members of our fraternity were involved. If information implicating any member of our organization arises, we will hold those individuals fully accountable."

Accusations that both the Emory chapter of ZBT and the University of Florida chapter of ZBT were involved were brought to light by Linda Cope, the founder of the Warrior Beach Retreat at Laketown Wharf Resort in Florida.

"They're a total disgrace for our military. They were urinating on the American flag. They were throwing things off of the balcony," said Cope.

"They actually spit on me and my service dog as well," said Nicholas Connole, a wounded veteran.

Both chapters of the fraternity were attending spring formals at the resort the same weekend the veterans were having their retreat.

The University of Florida's ZBT chapter doesn't appear to have denied involvement in the incident as the Emory chapter has, but an investigation promised by UF President Kent Fuchs is ongoing.

Cope said after the denial of involvement that, "There were too many students from Emory for none of them to be involved. It is hard for me to believe that no Emory student was a part of this. This denial is a slap in the face of veterans."

"They apologized to me in person, but only because they got caught," she added.

Laketown Wharf Resort released a statement saying that hotel security and local law enforcement both responded to the incidents, and that a preliminary report has been created. That report remains under wraps while they continue their investigation.

The executive director of Zeta Beta Tau International said that both chapters have been suspended while investigations continue.
