Wyoming County Bans Rodeo Gear for Deputies in Move Toward Uniformity

A Wyoming county has banned rodeo gear, such as cowboy hats and boots, for its deputies, sparking a controversy and prompting one deputy to retire.

Sublette County, Wyoming, Sheriff Stephen Haskell sparked controversy with a new dress code that bans deputies from wearing cowboy hats and boots.

The change was made in Sublette County, Wyoming, to establish consistent uniforms within the department, but it has met with resistance.

"When you take away my individuality, I don't want to stay," deputy Gene Bryson, 70, told Reuters.

Bryson was planning to retire later this year, but the new dress code pushed up his decision.

Haskell said safety also was a factor in his decision to require rubber-soled shoes as part of the dress code.

"We have a lot of snow, we have a lot of wind, we have moisture on the roads," Haskell said, according to NPR. "If you're in cowboy boots trying to help somebody on the side of the road, you are going to fall nine times out of 10."

Bob Boze Bell, the executive editor of True West magazine, told NPR that the ban on rodeo gear is part of an assault on Wyoming’s iconic culture.

"Here's the deal: The West is under assault from everywhere, mainly the East, by people who come out here and want to convert it into a 'world-class place,'" he said. "Well, we don't want it to be a world-class place. We're Westerners. We want it to be Western, and when you're Western, you wear cowboy boots and you wear cowboy hats, and that's just part of the deal."

The Sheriff’s Department explained its position in a post on Facebook.
