Alois Brunner, one of the world's worst Nazi officers, has been declared dead, shortly after he would've turned 102.

Efraim Zuroff, director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Israel office, told The Sunday Express that his organization thinks Brunner died in 2010.

"We have received information from a former German secret service agent who had served in the Middle East who said that Brunner was dead and buried in Damascus," Zuroff told the paper. "Given his age it would not be surprising and the information came from someone who we consider reliable."

Branded the world's most-wanted Nazi, Brunner is considered responsible for sending 128,000 Jews to their deaths during World War II. He worked as a trusted lieutenant to Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann.

Brunner was believed to have fled to Syria in 1954 using a phony Red Cross passport. He was eventually hired as a government adviser under the pseudonym Dr. Georg Fischer. He escaped capture — and multiple assassination attempts — for more than six decades.

He also survived two assassination attempts by the Israeli secret service, Mossad, according to The Express.

The Wiesenthal Center first learned of Brunner's death in 2010 by a German intelligence official, saying he died of natural causes. Though the death couldn't be confirmed, the center officially declared him dead because of his age.

In his only known interview, Brunner expressed regret for not killing more Jews.

"The significance is only that one very prime target can no longer be brought to justice, and that's very sad, because it just underlines the failure of the world community to see to it that the primary movers and shakers of the Final Solution were forced to pay for their crimes," Zuroff told the Express.
