World's Tallest Dog Dies: 5-Year-Old Great Dane Was 7'4" on Hind Legs

The world's tallest dog, a Great Dane named Zeus, died last week just a couple months short of his sixth birthday.

The pup was listed in the 2012 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records as world's tallest dog, measuring 44 inches from shoulder to foot and a staggering 7-feet-4-inches when standing on his hind legs, according to the Kalamazoo Gazette.

"We'll really miss him," owner Kevin Doorlag of Otsego, Michigan, told the newspaper, calling Zeus a "wonderful dog."

Zeus doubled as a therapy dog and made frequent trips to schools and hospitals. Therapy dogs are often trained animals who visit people in facilities as part of their treatment in order to lift motivation and spirits, according to Therapy Dogs of Vermont

Doorlag told the Gazette that Zeus brought a lot of joy to other people around the world.

"Those are some of the things I'll never forget about him," Doorlag said. "He was definitely a great dog."

In a 2010 Kalamazoo Gazette story, Doorlag said he decided to start keeping track of Zeus' height when he noticed that the dog kept sprouting taller and taller. He quickly grew to the point where he could comfortably drink water from the kitchen faucet with all four feet still on the ground.

"We started with a tape measure and he was afraid of the tape measure, so then we tried putting him against the door frame with marks on the door, and he didn’t like that either," Doorlag said. "I think it is just strange to him, and when he has people asking him to do new things he gets a little nervous."

Zeus will be remembered as a gentle giant.

"He loves to be petted, loves to sit on people's laps, and loves to give kisses," Denise Doorlag said in the 2010 Gazette article. "He's our first [Great Dane] and he's a doozy."
