A woman driving on the rim of her subcompact car is accused of sparking wildfires that burned 450 acres in Northern California.

The incident happened shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday in West Point in Calaveras County, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"She knew she was driving, but was oblivious to any of the carnage she was causing," California Highway Patrol Officer Tobias Butzler told the times.

"We heard it and it sounded like it was running on a steel rim and then we immediately smelled the smoke from the vehicle and looked and there was a fire on the corner of the property," homeowner Eugene Brooks told KCRA-TV.

The driver, Renee Hogan, was arrested for driving under the influence and faces charges for sparking the wildfires, the station said. She also reportedly had a suspended license.

Her 2002 Kia Rio burned in the resulting blaze. The fire forced some residents to evacuate, but no buildings were burned.

Driving on the flat tire caused a "shower of sparks that was igniting the grass shoulder of the roadway," the New York Daily News reported, citing a California Highway Patrol arrest report. Another driver failed to get Hogan's attention before driving around her, blocking her, and pulling her from the burning vehicle.

About 300 firefighters have battled the blaze, which was dubbed the Willow Fire.

The fire worried area residents, who are on heightened alert after last year's Butte fire killed two people and destroyed hundreds of homes in the area.

"You're always nervous. You get memories from the past," ranch owner John Mondino told KCRA-TV.

About 11,500 firefighters are battling dozens of fires in California during this season's wildfires, and officials are urging residents to be careful, The Associated Press reported.
