The World Health Organization (WHO) is claiming that more than 90 percent of the world is breathing polluted air, which is said to be responsible for some 6 million deaths a year.

A new data report from the UN’s global health body says that poorer countries have dirtier air than the developed world, according to Agence France-Presse. However, Maria Neira, the head of the WHO’s department of public health and environment, told reporters that pollution “affects practically all countries in the world and all parts of society.”

“It is a public health emergency,” she said. “Fast action to tackle air pollution can’t come soon enough."

According to AFP, Tuesday’s report, compiled using data from more than 3,000 sites around the globe, found that “92 percent of the world’s population lives in places where air quality levels exceed WHO limits.”

The data focuses on something called PM2.5, which is matter that includes toxins like sulfate and black carbon, the news agency noted. These toxins reportedly have the ability to eat through the cardiovascular system.

According to Neira, the UN agency is now using both satellite and ground measurements. She sees this as “a big step forward towards even more confident estimates of the huge global burden of more than 6 million deaths — 1 in 9 of total global deaths — from exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollution.”

“More and more cities are monitoring air pollution now, satellite data is more comprehensive, and we are getting better at refining the related health estimates,” Neira added.

“Air pollution continues to take a toll on the health of the most vulnerable populations — women, children, and other adults,” Dr. Flavia Bustreo, assistant director general at the WHO, said in a statement. “For people to be healthy, they must breathe clean air from their first breath to their last.”
