The Whitney Houston Lifetime biopic scheduled for a 2015 release has cast former "America's Next Top Model" contestant Yaya DaCosta in the leading role, it was announced over the weekend.

Directed by Houston's former "Waiting to Exhale" costar Angela Bassett, the story will follow Houston's life with entertainer Bobby Brown from the time they became a couple all the way through their rocky relationship and marriage, Deadline.com reported.

"I have such regard for both Whitney's and Bobby's amazing talents and accomplishments, and I feel a responsibility in the telling of their story," Bassett said, according to Deadline.com. "Their humanity and bond fascinates us all."

Houston died in 2012 at age 48.

DaCosta, 31, first appeared as a contestant on "America's Next Top Model" and later went on to land gigs on "All My Children," "Ugly Betty," and "House." She then added a few movie roles to her résumé, appearing in "Lee Daniels' The Butler" and "Tron: Legacy."

TMZ reported in May that Houston's family is not supportive of Lifetime's efforts to make the singer's life the subject of a biopic. They even reportedly considered a lawsuit initially to stop production.

"We're told the family has already expressed displeasure to Lifetime and made it clear they weren't on board with a TV movie," TMZ wrote last month. "Sources close to the Houston family tell us the estate is planning its own movie for the big screen — ala the 'This is It' Michael Jackson flick."

TMZ quoted family spokeswoman Pat Houston as saying that a small-screen film on the entertainer was hardly enough to capture her life.

"Whitney is certainly worthy of more than a television movie," Houston told TMZ. "If Whitney were here today, this would not be happening."

Houston's daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, tweeted last month that she should be the only person to portray her mother on film.
