A white whale was spotted off Australia's Gold Coast on Sunday, and both scientists and fans are trying to determine if it is Migaloo – the world's first documented white humpback – or a new whale.

"The photos coming in are inconclusive," Oskar Peterson, who is behind the "Migaloo1" Twitter account and has been collating information on the whale since the early '90s, told Mashable Australia. "He seems to be very shining white, while last year he had yellow coloring markings on him."

7 News Queensland obtained some of the best footage of the whale in question, and posted it to Twitter for all to share.

According to National Geographic, two other white humpback whales have been spotted near Australia's coast since Migaloo was first documented in 1991.

"One has been dubbed 'Migaloo Junior' or the 'son of Migaloo' — although no one knows whether this smaller whale is actually related to Migaloo," wrote NatGeo. The third white humpback has "black spots on its tail," the publication added.

TheAustralian.com.au reported that Seaworld marine sciences director Trevor Long thinks the recently spotted whale is most likely Migaloo Junior.

"Migaloo is a full adult male and this animal that we saw today is a lot smaller," Long noted.

Much like Migaloo, famous literary whale Moby Dick was also white, but was a sperm whale, not a humpback. White animals are usually albino, Leucistic, or have a trait called isabellinism.
