American tennis player Wayne Odesnik was slapped with a 15-year ban from professional tennis for using a prohibited growth hormone after the International Tennis Federation said he violated its anti-doping rules for a second time.

The federation said in a statement on Wednesday that Odesnik, 29, provided urine samples to the United States Anti-Doping Agency on Dec. 14 and to the International Tennis Federation on Dec. 17 and Jan. 12. The federation stated that the samples contained the prohibited substance in violation of anti-doping rules.

"Mr. Odesnik's commission of an anti-doping rule violation under Article 2.1 of the programme was confirmed, which was his second such violation, having been sanctioned in 2010 for the possession of human growth hormone," said the federation.

"It was, therefore, determined that he is suspended from participation for a period of 15 years, back-dated to commence from (Jan. 30), and so ending at midnight (Jan. 30), 2030," the statement said.

The tennis federation said his results from the Happy Valley Challenger, Australian Open and Maui Challenger will be forfeited along with ranking points and prize money.

Odesnik issued a statement, which was posted publicly on Twitter, saying he had unknowingly taken a banned drug.

"In December 2014, I unknowingly ingested a contaminated over-the-counter supplement," Odesnik said. "Upon learning of my positive test results I was immediately heartbroken as words could not describe my shock and disappointment."

"Being the most tested American tennis player on the tour, I would never knowingly have taken any chance of consuming a banned substance. The contaminated product is currently with an independent accredited testing laboratory in California for further testing at my own expense, and I am currently considering my legal options," Odesnik said.

Tennis stars Andy Murray and Andy Roddick showed little mercy for Odesnik in Twitter posts after news broke of the suspension.
