Washington, D.C., and airports across the Northeast experienced hundreds of flight delays and cancellations on Saturday, with officials citing a software update as the probable culprit.

According to The Associated Press, roughly 492 delays and 476 cancellations resulted from the glitch, with 70 to 88 percent of air traffic affected at Baltimore-Washington International Airport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and at Dulles International Airport. Flights leaving the New York area that fly over D.C. were also heavily affected.

"The FAA is continuing its root cause analysis to determine what caused the problem and is working closely with the airlines to minimize impacts to travelers," the FAA said in a statement.

Subsequent statements from the Federal Aviation Administration on Saturday and Sunday suggested there was a computer problem at the air traffic control center in Leesburg, Virginia, specifically with the En Route Automation Modernization computer system (ERAM).

The system was restored around 4 p.m., at which point "it is ultimately up to airlines to sort out the mayhem caused to their scheduling," The Washington Post reported

Many passengers were upset with the airlines, but the airlines were quick to blame FAA for the delay. When passengers turned the FAA's Twitter feed, however, there had been no updates about the delays or a possible timeline for a fix.

"The airline was saying, 'It’s not our fault, it’s the airport,' and the airport said, 'It’s not our fault, it’s the FAA,'" said Ilya Lozovsky, 32, who had been delayed seven hours at Dulles.
