American restaurant chain Waffle House let its patriot flag fly free this week, declaring "we don't believe" in Belgian waffles ahead of Tuesday's World Cup match between the U.S. and Belgium.

The Associated Press highlighted Waffle House's "beat-the-Belgians" rallying cry on Monday, which came via Twitter. It came with a good old American typo ("Belgium" should be "Belgian"), which Waffle House acknowledged, and soldiered through — valiantly tweeting and re-tweeting on throughout the day.

Speaking with NBC's "Today" show, spokesperson Meghan Irwin said, "We've never served Belgian waffles at Waffle House, and we just want to support Team USA. It's just supposed to be really fun, and we want to just stand behind Team USA."

In a follow up, TMZ reached out to spokespeople at the restaurant chain for a formal statement, which was gladly given: "We support America. We don't support Belgian Waffles." From there, they even upped the ante, declaring a full-scale culinary war: "We support a boycott on Belgian Waffles."

The boycott – which was declared in good-natured fun – instantly got traction, and fans began replying in kind.

Some fans pointed out that Belgian waffles sold in the U.S. aren't really eaten by most Belgians, and that most of the time they eat either Liege waffles or Brussels waffles — named for cities in Belgium. They were rightly declared wet blankets, however, and glided over on Team USA's march to imminent victory.
