Vivek Murthy: 'Marijuana Can Be Helpful,' Says Surgeon General

By    |   Friday, 06 Feb 2015 07:05 AM

Vivek Murthy, the new Surgeon General, said in a Wednesday interview that he thinks marijuana likely has some medical benefits.

"We have some preliminary data showing that for certain medical conditions and symptoms that marijuana can be helpful," Murthy told the hosts of "CBS This Morning."

"We have to use that data to drive policy making."

The surgeon general's comments came after a lengthy discussion of the measles vaccine — a hot subject since the recent outbreak of the virus at Disneyland.

The statements on marijuana are likely the most positive any surgeon general has ever made, especially considering that while it is legal in many states for medical and recreational use, it remains illegal as a Schedule I narcotic at the federal level.

The Huffington Post reported that after his appearance on CBS, the Department of Health and Human Services released a statement from Murthy.

"Marijuana policy — and all public health policies — should be driven by science. I believe that marijuana should be subjected to the same, rigorous clinical trials and scientific scrutiny that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) applies to all new medications," the surgeon general wrote.

"The Federal Government has and continues to fund research on possible health benefits of marijuana and its components. While clinical trials for certain components of marijuana appear promising for some medical conditions, neither the FDA nor the Institute of Medicine have found smoked marijuana to meet the standards for safe and effective medicine for any condition to date."
