US Classifies Afghan Security Forces Information for Protection

The U.S. has decided to classify details about Afghan security forces because the information could help the Taliban, said .

The detailed statistics will be withheld for the first time in six years, Gen. John Campbell, leader of the NATO coalition’s non-combat Afghanistan mission, wrote in a letter, saying that he doesn’t want the information used by insurgent fighters to harm U.S. or Afghan soldiers, ABC News reported.

John Sopko, U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghan Reconstruction, SIGAR, said he was concerned the lack of information would make it difficult for him to adequately account for how dollars are being spent on Afghan forces.

Sopko released a quarterly report on the situation there this week.

Sopko has been upset about Campbell’s decision to make much of the Afghan information confidential because his watchdog agency needs access to do its job, the Washington Times said.

A statement from Army Lt. Col. Chris Belcher, spokesman for NATO’s International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, defended Campbell’s decision to make protect information because the Afghan government asked that it be done.

“We appreciate, understand and support SIGAR’s responsibility to provide information to Congress and the American public,” the Times quoted Belcher. “At the same time, we have a responsibility to protect data that could jeopardize the operational security of our Afghan partners to include unnecessarily highlighting possible vulnerabilities and capability gaps; information which could provide adversaries critical intelligence that could be exploited endangering the lives of our Afghan partners and the coalition forces serving alongside them. Just as we classify our own armed forces readiness reports for security purposes, it is prudent for us as a reliable security partner to do the same for Afghan National Security Forces.”
