Two U.S. agents working for the DEA and Secret Service were charged Monday for allegedly stealing nearly a million dollars-worth of the digital currency bitcoin during a federal investigation of the underground drug website Silk Road.

Reuters reported via Recode that Carl Force, 46, a former Drug Enforcement Administration agent, and Shaun Bridges, 32, a special agent with the Secret Service, were charged with wire fraud and money laundering. Force was also charged individually with theft of government property and conflict of interest.

Both were part of a Baltimore-based task force investigating Silk Road.

The criminal complaint, filed in San Francisco federal court, said that Force "stole and converted to his own personal use a sizable amount of bitcoins," during the investigation.

"Rather than turning those bitcoin over to the government, Force deposited them into his own personal accounts," read the complaint.

The complaint said that Bridges diverted $800,000 worth of bitcoin into a personal account.

Force and Bridges had been employed by their agencies for 15 years and six years, respectively. Both resigned upon the announcement that they were being investigated.

Silk Road was possibly the biggest site on the so-called deep web to facilitate the sale of drugs and other illegal contraband using hard-to-trace bitcoin. It was shut down by federal authorities late last year.
