Four University of Georgia students were killed in a car crash in Oconee County near Athens on Wednesday while a fifth remained in critical condition.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, a Toyota Camry carrying the students reportedly crossed the center line on Georgia State Route 15 in Watkinsville, also called the Greensboro Highway, around 8:55 p.m., colliding with a Chevrolet Cobalt, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry said that the surviving student was admitted to Athens Regional Medical Center, reported the Athens Banner-Herald. He added that the driver of the Cobalt was taken to an area hospital and that person's condition was not available.

Berry said on the Oconee County Sheriff's Facebook page on Thursday that the Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident. He said that while all of the students have been identified, their names were being withheld for "extended family notifications and the fact that families have to travel a significant distance to arrive in town."

"We respect their privacy at this point and I trust you will as well," Berry said in the Facebook statement. "We grieve with them and we pray for comfort and solace during these unimaginable circumstances. The surviving occupant of the car is in critical condition and we pray for her healing as I am sure you do.

"… I will release the names of the victims here as soon as I am satisfied that their families are in town and all the notifications are complete," Berry continued.

Victor K. Wilson, vice president for student affairs at the University of Georgia, said in a statement that counseling will be available to students and that a memorial service will be held May 3 at 7 p.m. in the University Chapel.

"We are praying for the family and friends of these students, and ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers, as well," Wilson said in his statement. "We in the university community care for each other, and we especially treasure our students. The loss of four students in this tragic way is truly heartbreaking. … During this difficult time, I encourage all of us to support one another."
