An unexploded World War II-era bomb was found in a basement of an east London building site in Bethnal Green on Monday, forcing the evacuation of 150 people while it was removed.

Military experts safely removed the bomb Tuesday morning after residents spent the night away from their homes for about 24 hours, according to CNN.

The 500-pound bomb was found by contractors at a building site, according to BBC News. The London Fire Brigade told the news agency that it is believed that it was dropped during a German bombing raid in the 1940s during World War II, but it never detonated.

BBC News reported that it was the third time an unexploded bomb has been found this year. One was found in Bermondsey in March and another in Wembley in May, and both were removed safely from the sites.

The Daily Mail wrote that residents and business employees were evacuated up to 650 feet away from the bomb overnight Monday, leaving them to find alternate shelter overnight.

The Tower Hamlets council established a rest center for evacuated people at Bethnal Green Academy where emergency beds were set up.

"We are taking the advice of the Metropolitan Police and London Fire Brigade and will follow the council's emergency planning procedure to ensure residents and visitors to the borough are kept safe," a council member told the Daily Mail. "Residents and visitors are advised to avoid this area."

The London Fire Brigade station manager Matt Burrows told the BBC News that a "great deal of work" had to be done to safely defuse the bomb.

"This however, will be a protracted incident and we thank the local residents for their patience," Burrows said.

Germany dropped thousands of bombs on London during the Blitz from September 1940 to May 1941 with rocket attacks following for a year.
