"Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski reportedly reached out to a select few journalists saying he is ready to tell his story. But wait, another journalist warns. It might be a hoax, or a crafty way to promote himself.

Kaczynski, who wrote a 35,000-word manifesto before his capture, has written thousands of letters from prison and hundreds of other pieces detailing his views, said Yahoo News. There's even an archive of all his stuff at the University of Michigan.

New Yorker writer Lawrence Wright posted Kaczynski's supposed letter on Twitter.

Kaczynski was arrested in April 1996 and sentenced to four life terms for a series of mail bomb attacks that killed three people and injured nearly two dozen more. His brother, David Kaczynski, helped investigators and wrote about his brother's mental illness in a book, “The Last Tie: The Story of the Unabomber and his Family.”

“In order to determine who will get the interview, I am asking you to write me back affirming that you understand that I am not mentally ill as my brother, Dave, would have you believe,” the letter reads.

Fox News said Wright was criticized for his Tweet — “The Unabomber reached out. Thanks, Ted, you’re not nuts at all." — and later admitted that it was “unnecessarily snarky.”

But the letter may be a hoax, according to a blog post by Bryan Denson, a former reporter for The Houston Post and The Oregonian.

Denson said he received a similar letter in April. But a second letter arrived earlier this month saying Kaczynski did not write the first letter.

Denson pointed out that the letters had different postmarks, with the first coming from Santa Barbara, California, and the second postmarked in Denver, Colorado, about 110 miles from the Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado.

While saying he believes the first letter is a hoax, Denson added: "There’s another possibility that’s so outrageous that I just have to mention it: What if both letters are authentic and Kaczynski (as evidenced in the recent letter below) is just trying to hawk his books."
