U.K. supermarkets are rationing vegetables due to shortages caused by bad growing conditions.

British markets like Tesco and Morrisons announced Friday that they’re now rationing vegetables because of significant shortages in iceberg lettuce, broccoli, courgettes, and aubergines, according to BBC News.

According to the Daily Times, bad weather conditions in southern Europe are the main cause of the rationing.

“Due to bad weather conditions in Spain, we are experiencing some availability issues, but are working with our suppliers to resolve them as quickly as possible,” a Tesco spokesman said, according to the Daily Times.

In an effort to preserve vegetables for shoppers amid this crisis, markets have placed a cap on the selling of the produce.

“To make sure customers don’t miss out, we are asking them to limit the number of iceberg lettuces they buy to three,” the spokesman said, according to the Daily Times. “We have seen some bulk buying in our stores. We have therefore had a cap on sales of broccoli and iceberg lettuce to ensure we maintain good supplies for our regular customers.”

Morrisons has implemented similar limitations, prohibiting shoppers from buying more than two iceberg lettuces and three broccolis, BBC News noted.

These stores have hiked up the prices of these limited vegetables, the Daily Times noted.

Due to the shortages, stores have been forced to order produce from distant manufacturers, including those on American soil.

According to Euro News, the shortage is expected to remain an issue in UK supermarkets through April.

The vegetable rationing sparked reactions from Twitter users.
