Uber surge pricing, which takes advantage of high-traffic times, was the subject of scorn after Saturday's explosion in New York City when passengers were requesting Uber rides to remove themselves from the area.

As news broke that a device in the city’s Chelsea area had detonated, scared citizens took to their Uber apps to get them out, only to find out demand for the service was sky high.

Angry customers took to Twitter to express their frustration.

Shortly thereafter, Uber took to social media to announce that they had suspended their surge pricing.

According to Uber boosters, surge pricing is an incentive for drivers to pick up more passengers because they earn more money during peak times, which, in this case, was during the New York explosions Saturday.

This isn’t the first time Uber has been criticized for surge pricing. There was a similar issue in 2014 during the Sydney hostage crisis.

Uber agreed with New York's attorney general a few years ago to curb surge pricing during state emergencies and natural disasters. While there was no formal emergency announcement about the Chelsea explosion, Uber lifted the surge pricing anyway, calling it the appropriate thing to do.
