Twitter is testing a new buy button shopping service that allows users to make purchases from their favorite vendors within the website.

Whether accessing Twitter via desktop computer, mobile phone, or tablet, users will begin seeing a blue "Buy now" button at the bottom of select vendors' tweets, and will be prompted to enter their credit card and shipping information after clicking through. According to a company blog post published Monday, if a user's card is already on file, they will simply be prompted to confirm their info.

"I think of Twitter as the place to connect with the things that you love," said Nathan Hubbard, the former chief executive of Ticketmaster, who joined Twitter a year ago, according to The New York Times.

Initially, the buy button testing will be extended to a group of artists, brands, and nonprofit organizations — including Brad Paisley (@bradpaisley), The Home Depot (@HomeDepot), and 9/11 Day (@911Day).

Twitter's buy buttons were recently spotted in the wild by several tech blogs, but the new, official announcement places the company alongside Facebook, which announced its own buy-button testing in July. Apple is also expected to release a new payment system along with its new iPhone models on Tuesday.

Twitter currently makes virtually all of its revenue on advertising, and taking a payment processing fee from each transaction on its platform could generate significant revenue in the future, the company hopes.

Stripe will provide the processing for the payments made on the platform, and Fancy, Musictoday, and Gumroad will work with sellers on fulfillment.
