Twin giant panda cubs were born last week at the Schoenbrunn Zoo in Vienna, making it the second panda birth in Europe in three months.

Yang Yang the panda bear gave birth to the twins on Aug. 7 and they were captured on surveillance camera on Monday, according to Reuters. The two cubs where resting on the chest of Yang Yang in the photo.

Yang Yang, who has been monitored by cameras in a private pen so she is not disturbed with her cubs, has been constantly keeping them warm between her paws, noted Reuters. AFP reported that zookeepers initially thought Yang Yang gave birth to one cub but it was not until a week later when surveillance cameras picked up the second cub.

"It sounded as though two cubs were squealing, but we only ever saw one," zoo director Dagmar Schratter, said in a statement on Tuesday. "On Friday, the zookeepers were first able to make out two of them on the screen."

In June, another panda named Hao Hao gave birth to a cub at the Pairi Daiza Wildlife Park in Belgium, at that time making it just the sixth European panda birth in the last 20 years, according to BBC News.

Yang Yang gave birth to her last cub, conceived naturally with her partner Long Hui, in August 2013.

The BBC News stated that there are about 1,600 giant pandas believed to be in the wild, with another 300 in captivity. Female pandas are able to conceive in a roughly three-day window in the spring, making reproduction difficult.

AFP stated that Yang Yang and her partner Long Hui, both 16, are parents to three, Fu Long, Fu Hu, and Fu Bao, born in 2007, 2010 and 2013, respectively.

Eveline Dungl, a zoologist with the Schoenbrunn Zoo, told AFP that in accordance with Chinese tradition, the cubs will only be named after 100 days because up to 50 percent of newborns do not survive.
