New "Twilight" short films will be developed and distributed exclusively on Facebook, Lionsgate and author Stephenie Meyer announced this week in a preview of the new initiative, which will also be a vehicle for female filmmakers.

Fans of the popular young-adult book series — which was turned into a mega-successful movie franchise starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner — can expect the project, called "The Storytellers — New Creative Voices of The Twilight Saga," to debut next year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

First, a contest will be held to select five female filmmakers who will then create the short films. Selection and mentorship of the filmmakers will be led by Women in Film and a panel of celebrities, including Stewart, Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, and Julie Bowen, among others.

After that, fans will judge the best "Twilight" short, with the winner receiving a cash prize and career-advancement opportunities, The Reporter noted.

"More people than ever before are creating, discovering, and engaging with videos on Facebook," Dan Rose, the social network's vice president of partnerships, said in a statement. "This collaboration with Stephenie Meyer, Lionsgate, and Women In Film is a great opportunity to engage 'Twilight's' massive global audience on Facebook through an innovative premium video program."

The short film competition is sure to spark great interest, as the "Twilight" franchise has a massive audience, with the books selling more than 120 million copies globally. The five films, including the final "Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2," have raked in $3.34 billion worldwide, according to The New York Times.

"The female voice is something that has become more and more important to me as I've worked in the film industry," Meyer said in a statement. "I'm honored to be working with Women In Film, Lionsgate, and Facebook on a project dedicated to giving more women a chance to be heard creatively."
