Lions Gate and "Twilight" creator Stephenie Meyer have reached an agreement to release on Facebook a series of short films based on "Twilight" characters.

"We think Facebook is a great way for us to introduce the world of 'Twilight' to a whole new audience while re-energizing existing fans,” Michael Burns, Lions Gate’s vice chairman, told The New York Times.

The series of short films called "The Storytellers — New Creative Voices of 'The Twilight Saga'" will be financed by Lions Gate, backed by the Women in Film organization, and involve five female directors.

The directors will be selected and mentored by a team, including Meyer and "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart. Others on the panel are actresses Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, and Julie Bowen; Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the first "Twilight" movie; the film producer Cathy Schulman; and Jennifer Lee, who co-directed "Frozen," The New York Times said.

"The female voice is something that has become more and more important to me as I’ve worked in the film industry,” Meyer said, according to Variety. “I’m honored to be working with Women In Film, Lions Gate, and Facebook on a project dedicated to giving more women a chance to be heard creatively.”

Fans will participate in the selection of a grand prize winner through Facebook and crowdsourcing platform Tongal.

Original cast members aren’t expected to participate in the short films, The New York Times reported.

The four “Twilight” books have sold more than 120 million copies worldwide, and the five associated films drew $3.5 billion worldwide.

Twitter users had mixed reactions.
