Tupac's letter to Madonna, which will be up for auction July 19-28, reveals that the late rapper broke things off with the pop superstar because she was white and hurting his "image," according to TMZ.

Tupac Shakur, who died in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas on Sept. 7, 1996, wrote Madonna a year and a half earlier while serving a prison sentence stating that he was breaking off a sexual relationship with her.

In the letter, dated Jan. 15, 1995, and posted in portions on the TMZ website, the rapper acknowledges he was putting her career first and apologized to the pop star, telling her that "I never meant to hurt you."

"For you to be seen with a black man wouldn't in any way jeopardize your career, if anything it would make you seem that much more open & exciting," Shakur wrote in the letter. "But for me, at least in my previous perception I felt due to my 'image,' I would be letting down half the people who made me what I thought I was."

"I never meant to hurt you . . . It no longer matters how I’m perceived. Please understand my previous position as that of a young man with limited experience with a(n) extremely famous sex symbol," Shakur continued.

Shakur ended the letter asking if Madonna would visit him in prison so he could speak to her "face-to-face."

"I don't know how you feel about visiting me, but if you could find it in your heart, I would love to speak face-to-face with you. It's funny, but this experience has taught me to not take time 4 granted," Shakur wrote.

TMZ reported that the online auction site Gotta Have Rock and Roll will start the bidding at $100,000. The last letter written by Shakur sold for more than $170,000.

In late 1994, Shakur was found guilty of sexual assault and sentenced to one and a half to four and a half years in prison, while the following year his "Me Against the World" album reached No. 1 on the pop and R&B charts, according to Rolling Stone magazine.

Shakur served eight months of his sentence when he was released on a parole arrangement and a $1.4 million bond paid by Death Row label chief executive Marion "Suge" Knight. It was just months before his murder.

In was not until 2015 that Madonna confirmed the long-simmering rumors that two were a couple at one time, but no one knew how deep the relationship was, according to E! Online.
