Tullian Tchividjian Resigns: Billy Graham's Grandson Leaves Church

Tullian Tchividjian, the grandson of legendary evangelist Billy Graham, has resigned from his pulpit at the Florida megachurch Coral Ridge Presbyterian after admitting to having an "inappropriate relationship."

Tchividjian opened up about his affair in a statement to The Washington Post.

"As many of you know, I returned from a trip a few months back and discovered that my wife was having an affair," he said. "Heartbroken and devastated, I informed our church leadership and requested a sabbatical to focus exclusively on my marriage and family. As her affair continued, we separated. Sadly and embarrassingly, I subsequently sought comfort in a friend and developed an inappropriate relationship myself."

Coral Ridge Presbyterian, dubbed one of the most prominent churches in Fort Lauderdale and South Florida by the Sun-Sentinel, also issued a statement about Tchividjian's departure.

"Several days ago, Pastor Tullian admitted to moral failure, acknowledging his actions disqualify him from continuing to serve as senior pastor or preach from the pulpit, and resigned — effective immediately," the church said.

"We are saddened by this news, but are working with and assisting Pastor Tullian and his family to help them through this difficult time, and asking people to join us in praying that God will bring restoration through this process and healing to all involved."

Tchividjian, the 42-year-old son of Graham's oldest daughter Virginia Leftwich Graham and clinical psychologist Stephan Tchividjian, succeeded the late James Kennedy as senior pastor of Coral Ridge, according to The Post.

"The Leadership of Coral Ridge remains committed to promoting the transforming power of the Gospel," the church statement continued. "While we do not yet know whom God will direct to lead our congregation in the near future, we trust the Lord's guidance during this transition period, knowing He is our hope."

Graham, 96, has been a religious adviser to U.S. presidents including Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon Johnson, according to Time magazine.
