A U.S.-born Trump supporter’s undocumented husband has been deported back to Mexico after almost 20 years in the country.

Helen Beristain’s husband Roberto, who owned a restaurant in Indiana and had a work permit and driver’s license but no visa, was deported Tuesday in the midst of efforts to stay his removal, according to CNN.

“It all happened very, very quickly, and it’s like immigration services just wanted to get him out of the country,” family attorney Adam Ansari told BuzzFeed News. “We have 10 different attorneys working on this throughout the country and they all agree that this is highly unusual.”

Roberto entered the country illegally across the U.S.-Mexican border in 1998, according to Ansari, CNN reported. He married Helen in 2001, and they have three children together.

In 2000, the couple were on a vacation to Niagra Falls when they accidentally crossed into Canada. They were detained trying to re-enter the U.S. and Roberto’s illegal status was discovered by ICE, CNN reported.

Ansari claimed Roberto was incorrectly classified by ICE, which limited his ability to get a green card. Despite that, he held a job as a cook and had just become the owner of Eddie’s Steak Shed in January, CNN reported. He also had been voluntarily showing up for ICE check-ins in Florida for the past five years.

"He hadn't committed any crimes. He didn't even have a parking ticket," Ansari said, CNN reported. "From everyone's accounts he is probably one of the most lovable guys you will ever meet. He is a loving husband and father. And he put a lot of work into his restaurant."

Helen’s reasoning in voting for Trump was that he would "keep all the good people here" and not separate families without cause. “He just wants to keep us safe,” she said in March, CNN reported.

Ansari said she now feels betrayed.
