A dying man was told a lie – that President Donald Trump had been impeached – to comfort him at the very end, according his obituary.

Michael Elliott, who died April 6, was reportedly "no fan of the current president," noted The Oregonian's Kale Williams in a piece about the obituary. Elliott, who was born in either 1940 or 1941 in Charlottesville, Virginia, attended the University of Virginia and played semi-professional basketball.

But it was the final paragraph of the obituary that captured the most attention:

"Mike ran out of family long ago and is survived by his ex-wife and best friend, Teresa Elliott," it read. "And the last thing she said to him was 'Donald Trump has been impeached.' Upon hearing that he took his final, gentle breath, his earthly work concluded."

Teresa Elliott, 68, told the New York Daily News she told her ex-husband, who died from congestive heart failure, the fib during a phone call.

"I knew it was his very, very last moments," she told the newspaper. "I knew that would bring him comfort and it did. He then took his final breath."

She said her ex-husband, who she described as a "news junkie," had a strong dislike for the president. She said they were still close even though they had divorced some 20 years ago.

"If I could leave him with a happy piece of news then why wouldn't I?" said Teresa Elliott, adding she didn't regret the deathbed lie. "And maybe in the end it won't turn out to be a lie."

GQ magazine's Jack Moore questioned the truthfulness of the story.

"The obituary is real, but maybe it's all an elaborate joke," said Moore. "If so, I don't even care. Sure, it's funny because Donald Trump is a monster. But the idea that there's one person out there that got to sleep a little easier believing that Donald Trump was no longer president? It's a beautiful dream."
