"The Forger," a crime thriller featuring John Travola and Christopher Plummer, has turned out to be a bust with an announcement that the film will go straight to video, The Boston Herald reported.

The movie, which was filmed almost two years ago in Boston, will have an exclusive run on DirectTV starting March 26 before a limited release in theaters and availability via Video On Demand, the Herald said.

Travolta plays an art thief released from prison to spend time with his dying son before teaming up for a final heist with his father, played by Plummer.

It received poor reviews after debuting at the Toronto Film Festival last year.

“There are some solid elements here, but neither believability nor cohesion is among them in a contrived thriller,” The Hollywood Reporter said, adding that the problematic script has less that rings true as it get more complicated.

Travolta described researching painting for his role in "The Forger" in an interview with The Independent last year.

“I went to Hong Kong, and I studied with a famous instructor there, and then in the U.S. with another gentleman,” he said. “I had studied watercolor years ago because I loved Hopper, Edward Hopper, and my grandfather was a painter, and my brother paints. I took it up as well. But I really wanted to understand what a forger might feel he has to do to duplicate that.”

He said he can relate to the character, whose entire life is a forgery.

“As an actor, you’re pretending you’re other people. You’re actually hired to do it. And how well you do it is how well you research the characters,” he said.
