She inspired a notable female role in “Top Gun,” but Christine Fox’s accomplishments in the Defense Department and as the highest ranking woman in Pentagon history may motivate girls and women in real life.

Appointed by President Barack Obama, Fox has become the first woman in the Pentagon’s No. 2 job, a post she will hold until a permanent successor is confirmed by the Senate.

The longtime civilian defense employee was described by her boss, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, as “a brilliant defense thinker and proven manager,” CNN reported.

As acting deputy secretary, Fox “will be able to help me shape our priorities from Day One because she knows the intricacies of the department's budget, programs, and global operations better than anyone," Hagel said in a statement.

Fox’s experience includes running the Pentagon’s internal cost and program assessment office and the Center for Naval Analyses.

Fox’s encounter with filmmaking occurred while she was working as a mathematician at the Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego and she met movie producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, according to a 1985 People magazine profile.

The article quoted her: “‘They always know when I’m coming,’ she says with a sigh, ‘because I’m one of the few people around here whose heels click.’”

Producers of the film, looking to develop a love interest for Tom Cruise’s character, Maverick, came up with Charlie, a stunning astrophysicist played by Kelly McGillis, who instructed the Top Gun candidates.
