Tommy Lineberry Arrested at US Open After Golf Cart Hits Cop

By    |   Monday, 16 Jun 2014 08:45 AM

Tommy Lineberry, a golf cart driver chauffeuring NBC Sports analyst Roger Maltbie around the U.S. Open, was arrested after his cart hit a state trooper's leg at the course in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

North Carolina Department of Public safety spokeswoman Pam Walker told the Fayetteville Observer that Lineberry, 59, of Wilmington, was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, hit and run, driving while impaired and resisting, obstructing and delaying a law enforcement officer.

The newspaper reported that medical staff examined state trooper Ryan A. Goodin at the scene but he was not seriously hurt. Moore County jail officials released Lineberry Saturday night after he posted bail.

"They did take a test, and there was suspicion of impairment, potentially drugs," Walker told the Golfweek.

The Associated Press reported that Maltbie was following golfers Martin Kaymer and Brendon Todd when the incident happened. Maltbie had left the cart near the 11th hole when Lineberry told the state trooper, "I'm supposed to get the cart to Roger."

An AP reporter who witnessed the incident said the state trooper, who was holding traffic back as golfers teed off, sternly told Lineberry, "When a state trooper tells you to stop, that's what you're supposed to do."

The trooper said the cart struck his leg as it left the scene. The trooper chased and caught up with Lineberry, arresting and putting him in handcuffs.

"This is a new one," Maltbie told Golfweek after the incident that left him driverless until a substitute arrived. "I've been to a couple of rodeos and a county fair, and I've never had this happen."

An NBC spokesman told Golfweek that the network was looking into what happened. Maltbie said he and the driver were friends and drove him during the U.S. Open in 1999 and 2005 at Pinehurst.

"We are aware of the incident involving a local volunteer and will refrain from commenting further until we have all of the facts and have spoken to everyone involved," the spokesman said.
