Tom Selleck, the patriarch lead of the CBS hit drama "Blue Bloods," tells GQ that most TV dads, like Homer Simpson, are "idiots."

Selleck, who got his first big break in the television series "Magnum P.I." from 1980-1988, said he feels fortunate to play a positive role on television, but admits his Frank Reagan character has some "issues." He pokes fun at some of the other television fathers.

"I like to think I've set some of that example," Selleck told GQ. "I'm older than most of the actors. I play the patriarch, and it's a rare opportunity to show a positive example. I'm not – I don't believe in playing characters that aren't flawed. He's got issues, but at the same time, most dads on TV are idiots. Homer Simpson is an idiot."

Selleck added that there's nothing wrong with the fun of "The Simpsons," but he told GQ that "Blue Bloods" gives fathers, even if it is by accident, the role of being the adults in the room again.

"So, look, I'm not a message guy," Selleck said to GQ. "I think our job is to entertain – but I think there is an interesting by-product in 'Blue Bloods,' in a way, of a patriarchal family – in this case by accident, in the context of the show, because he lost his wife. And dads are still dads, even to grown-ups. I really felt grown-up when I discovered I was on my own."

"Blue Bloods," which has been on the air since 2010, stars Selleck as the family leader Irish-American family of law enforcement officers in New York City with family and as strong central theme, according to Fox News. The series also stars Donnie Wahlberg and Bridget Moynahan.

"'Blue Bloods' combines the classic American values of family, service, love and hard work," Dan Gainor, vice president of business and culture at the Media Research Center told Fox News., "It's a cop drama that is in many ways reminiscent of 'Duck Dynasty' even down to the family dinner. This is the kind of TV many Americans crave.

"As one of the stars said in a recent episode, the family's legacy is 'service.' When his son tells how four generations of the family served in our nation's wars he says 'I want to be just like him.' That's celebrating the best of us," said Gainor.
