Actor Tom Hiddleston, who won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Mini-Series or TV Motion Picture, apologized Monday for his acceptance speech, which many found boring and self-congratulatory.

Hiddleston won the award for his performance in “The Night Manager,” a win that was considered controversial since “The People vs. O.J. Simpson” star Courtney B. Vance was favored to win, according to ET Online.

Hiddleston’s acceptance speech was not well-received. In it, he told a long, rambling story about taking a trip to South Sudan to do humanitarian work, then coming across nurses and doctors who told him they were fans of the series and had watched it while the hospital was being shelled the month before.

Hiddleston said he was moved by “the idea that we could provide some relief and entertainment for people ... who are fixing the world in the places where it is broken.”

After seeing backlash about the speech on social media, Hiddleston apologized and said his intentions were good.

“I completely agree that my speech at the Golden Globes last night was inelegantly expressed,” the actor posted on Facebook Monday. “In truth, I was very nervous, and my words just came out wrong.”

“Sincerely, my only intention was to salute the incredible bravery and courage of the men and women who work so tirelessly for UNICEF UK, Doctors Without Borders and World Food Programme,” he continued. “And the children of South Sudan, who continue to find hope and joy in the most difficult circumstances.”
