TLC Kickstarter Campaign Seeks Funds to Make Band's Final Album

The 1990s R&B band TLC is turning to Kickstarter to fund its fifth and final album.

The group, which includes Tionne "T-Boz" Tenese Watkins and Rozonda Ocelean "Chilli" Thomas, tweeted about its decision on Monday. The group’s third member, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, died in 2002.

On Tuesday afternoon the campaign had 722 backers, pledging almost $70,000 of the $150,000 goal.

“We owe so much of our success to you,” the group wrote on the Kickstarter page. “Your loyalty and support throughout the past 20 years motivates us to do our best work. Without you, we wouldn't have ten top 10 singles and four number 1 singles. We wouldn't have won five Grammy awards or sold 65 million records worldwide. Without you, we wouldn't have become the most successful girl group of all time! Without you there would be no TLC!!”

The album “will stay true to the TLC sound, always confronting the real issues and life experiences.”

"Chilli" explained the decision to record without a major record label in an interview with Time: “We wanted to continue to stay outside the box. Fifteen years ago, we were really one of the first groups to work with MP3s, as far as a digital record. That was a big deal, and I remember people couldn’t believe we had done something like that successfully.”

Perks to those who donate range from a chance to vote for which track will be remixed to a digital download of the album to a professional photo shoot with TLC for those contribute $7,500.

The album is expected to release in May, The Associated Press reported.

Twitter users had mixed reactions.
