Tim Cook to Steve Jobs: I Can Donate Part of My Liver to You

Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly offered to give a part of his liver to Steve Jobs as the company founder was dying, but Jobs emphatically rejected the idea.

That story is just one of those offering insight into Jobs’ personality that is highlighted in the newest biography of the Apple guru. “Becoming Steve Jobs: The Evolution of a Reckless Upstart into a Visionary World” will be out March 24. Excerpts from the book, written by tech reporter Brent Schlender and Fast Company executive editor Rick Tetzeli, were published this week on Fast Company.

In the book, Cook related that he was upset to see Jobs’ health failing and, in desperation, Cook had his blood tested. After determining he was a match and talking to a doctor about how a partial liver transplant procedure would work, Cook approached Jobs.

“He cut me off at the legs, almost before the words were out of my mouth," Cook says in “Becoming Steve Jobs.” "'No,' he said. 'I'll never let you do that. I'll never do that.' Somebody that’s selfish doesn’t reply like that. I mean, here’s a guy, he’s dying, he’s very close to death because of his liver issue, and here’s someone healthy offering a way out . . . And he doesn’t think about it. It was not, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’ It was not, ‘I’ll think about it.’ It was not, ‘Oh, the condition I’m in . . .’ It was, ‘No, I’m not doing that!’”

It’s no question Cook much admired his mentor and friend. Bloomberg, in a close look at how Cook was leading Apple, reported that Cook has left Jobs’ office exactly the way it was when he died.

“It’s not a shrine or place of mourning, but just a space that Cook sensed no one could or should ever fill,” Bloomberg wrote, and then quoted Cook: “It felt right to leave it as it is. That’s Steve’s office.”
