Tiger Woods is in second to last place after the first round in his latest golf comeback at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.

Woods, who shot a one-over 73, begins play Friday nine strokes behind leader J.B. Holmes, who shot eight-under 64, reported the Golf Channel. Woods score placed him in 17th place among the 18 golfers in the tournament.

The one-time No. 1 player in the world started off hot, going four-under after the first eight holes, but unraveled after than bogeying No. 9 and then posted a double bogey on No. 18. Woods tried to put his best spin on the performance afterwards.

"It felt good to have that adrenaline surging through the system again. It's been a long time," Woods said to the Golf Channel. "To get up there on that first hole and feel it again and then dumb it down to be able to control it and get into my feel where I play my best, that was nice. I got it pretty quick."

CBS Sports writer Kyle Porter said despite Woods lackluster score over the back nine, there were some positive signs to the 40-year-old's game.

"This 73, while disappointing at the end as Woods shot 40 on the back nine, was a wild success for a few reasons," Porter wrote. "First, Woods' swing looked crisp, short and smooth. He wasn't trying to carry the ball 900 yards off the tee. He looked very much in control of his rhythm and his game. He has never been a very good driver of the golf ball, but his mistakes on Thursday are easily fixed."

It was Woods first round since playing in the Wyndham Championship in August 2015.

"I just made some really, if you look at it, some really silly mistakes," Woods told the Golf Channel. "Mistakes I don't normally make, but I haven't played in a while. Unfortunately, I made those mistakes, I can clean that up. We've got three more days."

Woods was last ranked No. 1 golfer in the world in May 2014 after posting five victories in 2013, according to Golfweek. Woods entered the Hero World Challenge ranked No. 898.
