Michael Jackson's "Thriller" has broken a new sales record by becoming the first album to ever sell 30 million copies in the U.S.

According to The Associated Press, the Recording Industry Association of America announced the album's 30-time multiplatinum status on Wednesday.

It also said that in addition to the U.S., "Thriller" has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide.

"What an exceptional achievement and testament to 'Thriller's' enduring spot in our hearts and musical history," said RIAA chairman and CEO Cary Sherman in a statement.

The album spawned multiple singles, including the title track, "Beat It," ''Billie Jean," and ''Wanna Be Startin' Somethin.'" The music video for "Thriller" is one of the most famous in the world.

"'Thriller' continues to be the yardstick against which all other albums are measured," said John Branca, co-executor of Jackson's estate.

"He didn't want to sell records to blacks or whites or Americans. He wanted to sell records to everyone, Africa, Asia, everywhere. It's just continued to sell and sell and sell."

Branca stopped short of saying that the album's new sales record was unbreakable, however, and saved some praise for newer artists, specifically Adele.

"You can't say never," he said, noting that Adele's "21" album has sold 11 million copies in the U.S. since 2011. "Nobody saw that coming."

Jackson passed away in 2009 at age 50.

The second highest selling album in the U.S. is a greatest hits collection by the Eagles, which has sold 29 million copies.
