Text a Smell on oPhone: App's 32 Scents Combine for 300K Aromas

You may soon be able to text a smell to your loved ones using a new device from inventor and Harvard professor David Edwards, the oPhone.

The Daily Mail reported Friday that new oPhone works in conjunction with your existing smartphone through the "oSnap" app, which allows you to transmit 32 unique scents that can be combined to create up to 300,000 different smells. Friends and family can receive those aromas anywhere they have their 'smell-phones' handy.

A crowd-funding campaign seeking $150,000 for the new company, Vapor Communications, kicks off June 17, on Indiegogo. Anyone with an iPhone will also be able to download the oSnap app that same day.

"Scent is the world’s natural tweet, because it takes just a few seconds to get a scent," said Professor Edwards. "The notion of people saying, 'I miss you in New York,' by sending a scent is really interesting and powerful. Or imagine taking a scent selfie and posting it on Facebook."

He said the plan is to raise the capital now, and manufacture the devices starting in early 2015 for a mere $149.

The San Jose Mercury reported that as part of the crowd-funding kickoff, Edwards "will send the first-ever trans-Atlantic scent transmission from the American Museum of Natural History in New York City to the Parisian receptor." The transmitted smell Edwards will choose remains a surprise, however.

Staring just two days after the crowd-funding kickoff, June 19, the official website of the new system, oNotes.com, reported that those interested will be able to visit prototypes of the device to take a whiff for themselves.

Speaking further about business development, Edwards said that, "In the near term, we’ll go where there are obvious business applications — places where the quality of aroma is associated with the quality of the product or experience."
