Tennessee Police Call In Sick: 404 Officers Out in Healthcare Protest

More than 400 police officers in Memphis, Tennessee, have called in sick over the past week, but they appear to be sick of planned healthcare cuts, not an actual illness.

According to The Associated Press, Memphis Police Department spokeswoman Karen Rudolph said Monday that 404 officers have called in sick since June 30, an increase from 308 officers who had called in sick through Sunday. The department has about 2,280 officers.

According to The Commercial Appeal, the Memphis police director said Sunday that the actions come in an apparent protest to a City Council vote that will reduce healthcare subsidies for city employees so that the funds can be redirected to the city's troubled pension fund.

The exodus has been deemed the "Blue Flu," and while officers aren't really sick, some are concerned for real public health and safety with so many officers not at work.

"I’m afraid that yes, citizens are going to be the ones that take the beating for that. But I feel that you have to stand up for what you believe and they deserve better. I think they're doing the right thing," Memphis resident Emily Schwartz told LocalMemphis.com.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is helping patrol the city while so many officers are out.
