A 7-year-old Tennessee boy was killed by his brother with a gun their mom left in her purse in their car while she went into a store.

The shooting happened about 3 p.m. Monday outside a Verizon store in Crossville where the mother and stepfather had stopped to pay a bill, said WBIR-TV

One of the four children left unattended in the couple's van, an 8-year-old boy, found the loaded Taurus ACP .380 gun and tried to unload it before it went off, striking the 7-year-old in the head, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.

The victim had stopped breathing and was bleeding from the head when Crossville police and Cumberland County Emergency Medical Services arrived at the store.

The boy died at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville Monday night after being flown there by helicopter from the Cumberland Medical Center.

Authorities identified the parents as Samantha Farley, 29, and Jacob Farley, 29, both of Sparta, Tennessee, said the News Sentinel. The children were not identified.

Cumberland County prosecutors said they will investigate the shooting to determine if criminal charges should be filed. Tennessee Department of Children's Services spokesman Rob Johnson told the News Sentinel that the three other children – including two girls, 9 years and 4 months – are being taken care of by relatives.
