A Tehran dust storm packing winds of up to 80 mph killed at least four people and injured 30 others in the Iranian capital Monday.

The dust storm blocked out the sun, leaving Tehran in darkness for several minutes while the high winds broke tree limbs and contributed to a 20-vehicle crash on a freeway south of Tehran, The Associated Press reported. A television report said that international flights were canceled as the city's air traffic controllers diverted local flights.

Agence France-Presse reported that the storm rolled into Tehran about 5:10 p.m. local time with winds strong enough to knock out electrical power to about 50,000 homes. AFP said the storm also shattered windows, tipped over telecommunication towers, and blew masonry off buildings.

Iran's chief emergency official Amin Saberinia initially told AFP that at least 27 people were hurt, including 10 in the road accident. Two of the injured were listed in critical condition, state television reported, according to AFP.

"This is like an apocalyptic Hollywood movie," one woman told AFP while escaping from the dust storm in Tehran's central business district.

"I've never seen anything like this. I was afraid it was an omen of things to come," another man reportedly said as he hurried into a building for protection.

Photos of the dust storm began to pop up on social media, despite efforts by the country to control such websites.

Some 7,000 emergency workers were reportedly sent into the city to help with the cleanup efforts after the dust had settled. Ahad Vazifeh, in charge of government weather forecasts, told AFP that bad weather in the area could last until Wednesday.
