Teen Shoots Brother After Argument Over Food: Report

By    |   Thursday, 26 Mar 2015 01:27 PM

A Florida teen shot and killed his 6-year-old brother and wounded his older brother this week before turning the gun on himself and committing suicide in an incident police say stemmed from an argument over food.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco told the Tampa Bay Times that the 13-year-old suspect had died and the older, 16-year-old brother was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. None of the boys was identified.

The mother of the boys was reportedly working at the time of the Wednesday shootings and another 18-year-old brother was not at home either.

It's not yet clear how the 13-year-old suspect got a hold of the gun or who owned it.

Nocco told reporters that authorities believe the incident began with an argument, which then escalated to the shooting at the family's mobile home in Hudson, Florida, about 45 miles north of Tampa.

"This is a horrific scene," he said. "This is a nightmare when you hear about the ages of these boys, a 6-year-old that was probably playing in his room, an argument over food and he lost his life."

It was the second time in seven months that Hudson, a town of nearly 13,000, has made national headlines because of a shooting. Last September, 28-year-old Adam Matos was arrested after authorities issued an Amber Alert for 4-year-old Ismael "Tristan" Santisteban, WTSP-TV reported.

Matos and Santisteban were missing when police performing a welfare check found the dead bodies of four people — two males and two females — in the home where the child lived. The boy was later found unharmed at a local motel after Matos' arrest.
