'Tankbuster' Jets to Europe: US Sends Aircraft for Security Support

The U.S. Air Force is sending 12 A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft, known as tankbuster jets, to Europe as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, which was formed to reassure NATO allies of U.S. commitment to peace following the Russian intervention in Ukraine.

Along with the jets, about 300 airmen and support equipment from the 355th Fighter Wing, based at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, will deploy to Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, according to a U.S. Department of Defense statement.

“While in Germany, these aircraft will forward-deploy to locations in Eastern European NATO nations,” Navy Capt. Greg Hicks said in the statement. “Units will conduct training alongside our NATO allies to strengthen interoperability and to demonstrate U.S. commitment to the security and stability of Europe."

The tankbuster jet, also known as the “Warthog,” was designed in the 1970s and is best known for its nose-mounted Gatling gun that can quickly tear apart a tank, CNN reported.

The aircraft have been used in battle in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans. The Air Force plans to retire the jets in 2019 and turn its focus to the F-35.

That decision has sparked controversy, with critics praising the A-10 for its relatively low price tag and its ability to fly low and slow, CNN said.

The A-10s departed from Arizona on Monday.

"The Air Force values the A-10 and will continue to use it while it remains in the Air Force inventory," Air Force Spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Karns said, according to Military.com.
