A tour bus on the way to the airport in Taiwan crashed into a guardrail and caught fire on Tuesday, killing all 26 people on board who were trapped inside.

Among the dead were 24 tourists from China, including three children, along with a Taiwanese tour guide and the bus driver, CNN reported. The tourists were from Dalian City in Liaoning Province, China.

The bus was traveling to Taoyuan Airport on the No. 2 National Freeway at the end of a weeklong tour.

The fire department deployed 23 vehicles and 60 firefighters to the scene.

"The fire moved very fast. All 26 died," Lu Jui-yao, an official with the National Highway Police Bureau, told Reuters.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.

Several men tried to fight the fire with small fire extinguishers before fire fighters arrived, The Mirror reported.

The Guardian called the crash "the deadliest incident involving Chinese tourism to the island."

All of the victims died inside the bus, according to chief Lai Chi-chong. "There was not enough time for them to escape," he told reporters.

The bus's doors were pressed against the guardrail, making them impossible to open, The Guardian reported. Some of the badly charred bodies were piled in front of the unopened emergency exit.

Prior to hitting the guardrail and catching fire, the bus was seen swerving and giving off smoke, eyewitnesses reported.

Taiwan has become a popular vacation destination for Chinese tourist during the past two decades. Travel between the sides previously was restricted.
