Super Bowl 50 Logo Ditches Roman Numerals in One-Time Change for NFL

What should be Super Bowl L will actually be known as Super Bowl 50, as the NFL drops its Roman numeral tradition for the championship game in 2016.

Work on logos for the game, which is set for Feb. 7, 2016, at Levi's Stadium in California, has been ongoing since April 2013. The Roman numeral for 50, L, reportedly didn't look as good as the digits, ESPN said.

"When we developed the Super Bowl XL logo, that was the first time we looked at the letter L," Jaime Weston, NFL’s vice president of brand and creative, told ESPN. "Up until that point, we had only worked with X's, V's and I's. And, at that moment, that's when we started to wonder: What will happen when we get to 50?"

But the switch is for one year only. Roman numerals, which have been used each year since 1971, will return for the following Super Bowl.

Twitter users seemed to favor the switch, though many thought or wished it was for more than one year.
